[2025-04-10] Horizon: Modern Dutch Fishery – trading between the Netherlands and Japan

Last week we were pleased to welcome Dujat members for a unique and inspiring event on Urk – giving us some great insight into the fishing village as well its history and culture, the role they play as a large and innovative seafood community, and of course their connection with Japan.

We started the event with a word of welcome by Qing Marr-Li, Head of Team International at Horizon Flevoland, and a presentation about the interesting developments in the province of Flevoland by Eric Hanson, International Trade Developer at Horizon.

Then in his presentation, Nathanaël Middelkoop, alderman for economic affairs at the Municipality of Urk told us more about the history and story behind the fishing village and seafood hub, and for example, that the correct phrase is to say we were ‘on’ Urk, because the place was previously an island.

After the story of Urk, we were delighted to learn more about Seafood Connection B.V., which is a subsidiary of Maruha Nichiro Corporation, one of the world’s largest fish companies. Klaas Hakvoort, COO of Seafood Connection Holding B.V. gave a great introduction of the company and their strong synergy with Maruha Nichiro.

We ended the event with an engaging walking tour through the picturesque Urk and a networking lunch. Many thanks to Horizon Flevoland, the Municipality of Urk and Seafood Connection for this fun and inspirational event. Arigatou gozaimashita!

Together with Horizon, we are pleased to invite you to our Modern Dutch Fishery event on Thursday 10 April, taking place in Urk, Flevoland.

As a Seafood Hub for Europe, Urk is always on the move. What began as a small fishing village on the Zuiderzee has grown into a large and innovative seafood community.

For this event, we would like to welcome you to the center of this picturesque fishing village, where we will first have presentations by Horizon Flevoland and Seafood Connection, which is part of the Japanese multinational Maruha Nichiro, one of the world’s largest fish companies.

After the presentations, we will have a guided tour around Urk, followed by a networking lunch. This unique event will give a great insight into the Dutch fishing sector, and we look forward to welcoming you. Please note there is limited space so if you are interested, we recommend to register as soon as possible!
