The municipal authorities of the city of Amstelveen and the King’s Commissioner in North Holland, Johan Remkes have agreed to appoint drs. H.B. (Bas) Eenhoorn as acting Mayor of Amstelveen, effective October 1st, 2017.

The position of mayor has become vacant as a result of the departure of Mrs Mirjam van ‘t Veld on that date.

It is standard procedure to appoint an acting mayor in cases where the position is expected to remain unoccupied for a period longer than 3 months.

Mr. Eenhoorn is being appointed as acting mayor for an extended period in connection with the municipal elections in March of next year. This will enable the newly elected city council to prepare a profile of the new mayor.

Mr. Eenhoorn is presently National Commissioner for Digital Government (Nationaal Commissaris voor Digitale Overheid) as well as Chairman Advisory Body Wadden Sea (Regie College Waddengebeid). He was mayor of the cities of Voorburg (1983-1996), Schiermonnikoog (1976-1983) and acting mayor of Vlaardingen (2014), Alphen aan den Rijn (2010-2013), Kaag and Braassem (2009-2010) and Lansingerland (2007).

Bas Eenhoorn is 71 years of age and a member of the VVD.
